6 Tips for Taking Kids to Enjoy Lanterns During Mid-Autumn Festival

  • Avoid the Mid-Autumn Festival itself. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department also urged the public to avoid visiting Victoria Park on September 25. The lantern festival starts on September 17, and there are far fewer people on weekday evenings, making it more comfortable for children to enjoy the spectacle.
  • LED lanterns were selected. Candle lanterns are not suitable for crowded places; LED lanterns are safer and easier for young children to carry themselves.
  • A meeting point is agreed upon. Upon arrival, agree on an easily identifiable landmark with your child and place a card with your phone number on it on your child.
  • Prepare mosquito repellent products and water. Victoria Park, the Blue House, and the Shing Mun River area are all outdoor venues, and it's still sweltering on September nights.
  • Keep an eye on the weather. September is still typhoon season, so check the Observatory forecast and the latest arrangements from the organizers before you depart.
  • Extend your learning after returning home. Ask your child to draw their favorite lamp or fire dragon of the night and tell the story behind it, turning "watching the excitement" into an observation and expression exercise.

Summary

The Mid-Autumn Festival is about family reunion, and a good place doesn't necessarily have to cost money. For younger children, more peaceful venues like Lee Tung Street, Gold Coast, and the Cultural Centre are most suitable. For children in primary school, the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, the Space Museum, and lantern workshops offer more cultural and scientific experiences. Wishing everyone a happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

After viewing the lanterns, have the children draw them.
